Connecticut's Annual World Water Day Event
Description
This year, Save the Sound, The Nature Conservancy, Rivers Alliance, Clean Water Action, CT River Conservancy, CT Land Conservation Council, CT League of Conservation Voters, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, and other partners are coming together for a digital/virtual celebration exploring “Groundwater - Making the Invisible Visible.” We’ll also be recognizing and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, how far we’ve come and how we can all do our part to protect clean water.
Please join us on Monday, March 21, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. for a free online event including:
- Remarks from Gov. Lamont;
- A “Groundwater 101” presentation; and
- A panel discussion that will explore threats to groundwater and steps we can all take to ensure every Connecticut resident has access to clean water, now and in the future.

Raised in Wilton, CT, Bill grew up exploring and fishing Long Island Sound before attending the University of Vermont. He went on to serve the Peace Corps in Guatemala and lived in Alaska for 20 years where he worked as a federal biologist, commercial salmon and halibut fisherman, and as municipal biologist/coastal planner. Prior to his return to CT, he was the project manager for the Kauai Invasive Species Committee with the University of Hawaii. Melissa Mostowy Melissa Mostowy graduated with her undergraduate degrees in Earth Science – Secondary Education (2015) and Geoscience (2016) from Central Connecticut State University and a master’s degree in Earth and Environmental Science (2018) from Wesleyan University. Currently, she is a Natural Resource Specialist with the Southwest Conservation District where she works with municipal, state, and federal employees as well as private residents to address natural resource concerns of all kinds throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties. Melissa also serves on the board of directors with the Geological Society of CT as well as the steering team of the West River Watershed Coalition. Sharon Lewis Sharon E. Lewis is the Executive Director of the CT Coalition for Environmental Justice which promotes environmental justice through community advocacy and engagement. She was exposed to advocacy at an early age. Sharon worked for corporate America in the reinsurance and insurance industry for seventeen years where she traveled extensively, representing the insurance interests with regard to major catastrophes such as hurricanes, tornados and other natural disasters. It was her dealings with the Love Canal situation that gave rise to her feelings for the lack of environmental justice in low income and communities of color. Currently, she serves on the Board of the Rivers Alliance, as well as several environmental and health committees convened by the State of Connecticut. Virginia de Lima After two teaching careers—one in second grade and another in Junior High science and math, Virginia joined the U.S. Geological Survey working in water resources. She retired in 2014 from the USGS after 33 years, working first as a ground-water modeler in Massachusetts and then as a manager. She retired as Director of the USGS Connecticut Water Science Center. Virginia has continued to be involved with water issues in Connecticut as a member of the Water Planning Council’s Advisory Committee. She also has helped in the development of the State Water Plan, chairing the Science and Technical Committee, and now co-chairing the Implementation Committee for the plan. Virginia enjoys being active. She is a rower, likes to hike and cross-country ski, and uses her bicycle as transportation, often showing up to meetings on two wheels. She is a frequent volunteer and crew leader with Habitat for Humanity building houses in the Hartford area. John W. "Jack" Betkoski III John “Jack” Betkoski III is Vice Chairman of Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA). Betkoski has served on Connecticut’s utility regulatory authority since 1997. He is the former President of the New England Conference of Public Utilities Commissioners (NECPUC) and is the former President of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). In addition to his NECPUC and NARUC responsibilities, Betkoski is currently Chairman of the Connecticut Water Planning Council. Vice Chairman Betkoski was born in Waterbury and is a lifelong resident of Beacon Falls, Connecticut. He received his B.A. from Sacred Heart University, and his M.S. and Sixth Year Diploma in Advanced Studies in Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University.
