Alex, the model does not differentiate among fertilizer types. Almost all of the nitrogen types are bioreative (some organism can use them), so all fertilizers have the potential to enter groundwater and impact the water quality. Some folks also ask about organic versus inorganic fertilizers - in terms of water quality, nitrogen is nitrogen, regardless of the form. There are other reasons to use organic vs. inorganic, or slow-release vs. fast-release, but from a water quality perspective, they all gave the same impact.

we often see beach clean up days, should we also be having days people go out and pull out the algae/seaweed and throw it into compost piles?

Stonington Borough had citizens raking the beach and depositing it in bins supplied by the town, which was then hauled away for disposal at a land fill (Can't compost as the material has not been tested for contaminants). That is certainly an option, and a form of opportunistic bioextraction. BUT - at least in CT, you can only collect what is on the beach or what is floating - you cannot intentionally disturb the bottom without a permit from DEEP.

Hi Kristin! And Hello from across the sound in Montauk where we are also growing sugar kelp to create nitrogen sinks then convert it into fertilizer for our farms and gardens, trying to create a closed nitrogen loop, more info about that here

If I understand correctly, the cost for upgrading about 1000000 septic systems is $1.4 billion, which comes to about $14,000 per system. That seems low by about half for a new system, so it must be a retrofit. Is there such a technology for that cost?
